MICRODISPLAY
REPORT Volume 3 Number 8 NEW & Analysis Debuting with its first product is a new company called Lumin-oZ (Culver City, CA). The Revolution product is, "a flexible screen that can be bent, molded into 3D forms, or cut to any size and shape while still retaining sharp picture quality in high ambient lignt." The Revolution technology consists of an optical polymer film that can be vacuum formed onto any shape. It does not utilize surface manipulation of light the way Fresnel/lenticular design does, but instead embeds the optical properties of the screen in the film itself. As a result, there is no loss of bright[ness] or viewing angles, or restrictions on the resolution of the image. The company claims its new screen offers a consistent gain of 6.0 - the highest in the industry - with a 180 degree viewing angle. It can be viewed in high ambient lighting conditions, has excellent color rendition, and can be used in front or rear projection applications. Plus, it is lightweight and durable. The company was at SID '2000 showing off the technology, but unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to see it. It certainly sounds exciting, however. |
